Obituary for MARK-KAEFER

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Thursday September 02, 2010

Sonia Blanche Mark-Kaefer passed away in Albuquerque, NM on September 1, 2010. The only child of Lawrence N. Haas and Dorothy Ewing Haas, she was 79 years old. She is survived by her husband of twelve years, Charles Kaefer, and was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years Glenn Gilbert Mark in 1996. Mrs. Mark Kaefer was a school teacher for 28 years in the Panama School District of Bakersfield, California where she taught Fourth Grade and Reading. She also served in numerous local and statewide roles in the California Teachers Association and retired in 1989. She taught two years in Saudi Arabia when Glenn worked in the oil business there and she traveled to more than two dozen international destinations during her life. Sonia sang alto in church choirs for 45 years and was quite active in church service of all kinds at First Christian Church (Bakersfield) and Rio Rancho United Methodist Church. She was a big supporter of missions and special ministries and the family asks for a contribution to Rio Rancho United Methodist Church Mission Fund in lieu of flowers. Sonia's first son Brian became a teacher and principal at Panama School District, too, and retired after 30 years to become a Methodist Minister this past summer. He and his wife Barbara Duck raised Bryan, Brent and Brooke. The boys are married to Melissa and Deanna, respectively. Bryan and Barbara are also teachers; all of them inspired by Sonia for many, many years. Her middle son Cliff is married to Lu Goodwin and has two children; Jesse Mark and Rachael Mark. All of them live in Austin, TX where Cliff is an author and Lu is an artist. Her youngest son Russell is married to Donna Mosman and is an architect and construction professional. They raised Brandon Mark (Attorney) and Marissa Mark Mundell (Uriah). There are three grandchildren (Phoebe, Hadassa, and Xander) with a fourth on the way. Sonia was blessed to have a second love story in her life and married Charles "Chuck" Kaefer in 1998. This brought another teacher into the family (Daughter Mary Kaefer) as well as another lover of music (Chuck's son Karl) and two outdoor enthusiasts (Chuck's eldest son Charles and his wife Jan). Sonia always derived great joy and comfort from her 'second" family and will miss them as she goes to see what other wonderful adventures her God has in store for her. She was uplifted and grateful for the many prayers and countless expressions of concern she received these past ten weeks and both her families are thankful to all who loved her. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, September 4, 2010 at 10:00 am at Rio Rancho United Methodist Church, 1652 Abrazo Road NE, Rio Rancho, NM 87124, 505-892-0404.
