Obituary for SMITH

Reverend Fergus A. Smith died peacefully at home on Thursday, August 26, 2010, following a short illness, surrounded by friends and loved ones. He is survived by his nephew, Keith Smith and wife Melissa; grand-niece, Alison and grand-nephew, Colin; as well as many friends and colleagues who loved and will miss him. Reverend Smith was born in Glasgow, Scotland on June 27, 1948. He attended Glasgow University in Scotland as well as studying in Vienna and at Cambridge University, and was ordained by the Edinburgh Presbytery. Following ordination, he served as the Edinburgh University Chaplain. In 1988, he took the position of Senior Minister and Head of Staff at First Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia. His tenure was marked by growth and many achievements, the most notable being the formation of the Philadelphia organization MANNA (Metropolitan Area Neighborhood Nutrition Alliance), providing services to men, women and children living with HIV, cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. The organization continues to provide these essential services today. Reverend Smith most recently served as the Chaplain for Hospice de la Luz in Albuquerque, as well as Pulpit Supply for the Santa Fe Presbytery. Fergus Smith, a beloved pastor, was known to be a thought-provoking and highly intelligent preacher and a man of unfailing compassion. His presence will be missed and the loss deeply felt. We wish to acknowledge Dr. Zamora and the kind competent staff at UNM Hospital for their care and concern and the staff of Direct Funeral Services for their compassion and support. There will be a memorial service at the Immanuel Presbyterian Church, 114 Carlisle SE on Monday, August 30, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. with a reception to follow at the home of Lynnette Wallner, 3100 Grande Vista Pl. NW. Directions will be available at the service.
