Obituary for ZIMMERMAN

Ila Fern Koger Shepard Zimmerman, age 88, died, Thursday, July 22, 2010, in Amarillo, TX. She was born on January 29, 1922, at Amistad, NM to Joseph W. and Ila Belle (Vernon) Koger. Upon the death of her mother, Fern, at the age of two weeks, was given to Jim and Nettie Shepard to raise. She was a graduate of Lovington High School and Texas Women's University at Denton, TX and was a Home Economics teacher in Cimarron, NM for two years, coming to Clayton to teach Home Economics in 1946, retiring in 1975 after teaching 31 years. Many, many girls learned the art of sewing and cooking from Fern. In 1948 Fern married Willard Foster Zimmerman and he preceded her in death on July 13, 1980. At an early age Fern became a member of the Church of Christ and remained true to her faith. She is survived by a niece, Kay Koger of Clovis, NM; and a nephew, Ira Guy Shepard and his sons Jimmy and Heath Shepard of Aztec, NM. Friends may gather at Hass Funeral Home in Clayton, New Mexico for Visitation on Sunday, July 25, 2010 from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. MDT on Thursday, August 5, 2010 in the Santa Fe National Cemetery, with Jim McDonald officiating.
