Obituary for COLLINS

Peter Collins, 72, a resident of Albuquerque for 16 years, passed away suddenly on Saturday, July 17, 2010. He is survived by his loving wife of 39 1/2 years, Gloria Elizabeth Collins; sister, Lucy Cheyne and husband, James, of Switzerland; brother, Robert Collins and partner, Sharon Treat, of Maine; step-mother, Emily Collins of Virginia; and his many friends. Peter was preceded in death by his parents, George Briggs and Elsa Leser Collins. He was born on March 19, 1938 in South Bend, Indiana. Peter had degrees from Swarthmore College, Columbia University School of Russian Studies, George Washington University and many graduate courses at the University of New Mexico. He was a Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University, Palo Alto, CA. Peter retired after 30 years in the Foreign Service as a Diplomat. His embassy assignments abroad included Athens and Thessaloniki, Greece, Vietnam, in Paris as a delegate to the Vietnam Peace Talks, U.S. Mission to NATO/Brussels, Belgium, and Lisbon, Portugal. He later joined Sandia National Laboratories as a consultant. He was very active in the Albuquerque Road Runners/ Master Runners and was a dedicated runner, a tennis player, and an avid baseball fan. Peter was a loving husband, brother and friend and will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Cremation has taken place and Peter's family will be receiving friends at the residence on Saturday, July 31, 2010 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, 5001 Angel Canyon Rd., Kanab, Utah 84741.
