Obituary for YEATS

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Monday May 03, 2010

E. Christine Dodson Yeats, 89, was born in St. Louis, Oklahoma on May 23, 1920 to Vernie Allen Dodson and Stella Beatrice Hines Dodson passed away on May 1, 2010. The family moved to Hughes County in 1923 buying a farm near Dustin, Oklahoma. She was brought up by her mother to be a lady and doing no outside field work, except occasionally gathering eggs, feeding the chickens and gardening. As she later described it, "I had a father, three brothers, a husband, and two sons to do the men's work." She attended school at Big Prairie and although she was brought up to be a lady, she rode the two miles to school on a mule even in the snow. She could scale a barbed wire fence with no trouble and thought it was funny when her town cousins were afraid of chickens when they came to visit. She transferred to Dustin in the fifth grade and graduated from Dustin High in 1938. Christine was a prankster, sometimes squeezing a wet cloth under the nose of her brother Eugene while he slept, making him think he had a runny nose. She could get tickled and laugh a long time over funny situations. Everyone loved when she laughed, especially her grandchildren, saying to her when they were young, "Mama, let's laugh!" She married Roscoe W. Yeats on September 9, 1939. The family lived in several towns in Oklahoma; Pharaoh, Lamar, McAlaster, Holdenville, and Ada. They also lived in California and Kansas, before finally settling in Albuquerque, NM in 1964. The couple ran Portrait Studios for 15 years before Mr. Yeats semi-retired and worked for Standard Life Insurance until his death in 1996. Christine worked for the Credit Department for JC Pennys for 10 years before retiring in 1993. She was a very warm, kind and loving woman. Mama was the foundation of the family and always made a common house a bright and inviting home. She was also preceded in death by her mother, father and brothers: Ruben, Phoenia, and Eugene. Christine is survived by her two sons: Jimmie Yeats, his wife Alid Godoy Yeats, and Philip Yeats and his wife Eileen Jessen all of Albuquerque, NM. Grandchildren: Sonnya Cristina Yeats DeBonis, her husband, Eric DeBonis of Scottsdale, AZ and Scott Jimmie Yeats, his wife Misty Yeats, Albuquerque, NM. She is also survived by four great-grandchildren: Amanda Jewell-Montono, Jessica Waggoner, Michael James DeBonis and Alexis Christine DeBonis. She is additionally survived by one sister-in-law Mary Ella Cook of Dustin, Oklahoma and numerous nieces, nephews, family and friends. Services will be held in Oklahoma.
