Elizabeth Rosa (Platt) Corliss, 88, passed away Friday morning, April 9, 2010 at La Vida Llena Retirement Community in Albuquerque, NM. Born March 28, 1922 in Barberton, OH to the late George R. and Catharine (Moser) Platt, she graduated from Barberton High School as salutatorian and received her B.A. from the College of Wooster in Wooster, OH. Betty went to northern Maine to teach high school where she married Ray E. Corliss August 25, 1946. They were married 63 years. Known affectionately to her family as Pinky, she is survived by her dear husband, Ray, in Albuquerque; son George (Vi) Corliss in Waukesha, WI; daughter Ann (George) Brickner in Findlay, OH; sisters Amanda Lorig in Monroe, OH, Jean (Bernard) Izzo in Lombard, IL, and Helen (Robert) Weihenmayer in Gahanna, OH; granddaughters Mary (Kevin) Schueller in Eagle, WI, Jennifer (Nowell) York in Gahanna, OH and Michelle Brickner in Cleveland, OH; grandson Peter Oestreich in Chicago, IL; great grandsons Michael and Thomas Schueller and great granddaughters Samantha and Sophia York. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter Jane Corliss and brother-in-law Edwin Lorig. Betty taught high school English and Latin in Sherman Mills, Maine until she became a farm wife and mother. After the family moved to Ohio in 1956, she resumed her teaching career in Milford Center, Piqua, Bellville, and Clear Fork high schools. She was the Richland County Teacher of the Year in 1964. She earned her Master's Degree in Counseling in 1967 from the Ohio State University and was a Guidance Counselor for the Southwestern City Schools near Columbus. She retired in 1979 when she and Ray moved to Albuquerque, NM. She loved history and the land and traveled around the state learning all she could about New Mexico and its people. Whenever friends or family visited, she was the best tour guide in the state. Over the years, he made nearly 200 afghans and baby blankets for family and friends Rio Grande Presbyterian Church was her church, and she was one who helped inspire many fun, zany, and inspirational events at the church. Betty and Ray moved to La Vida Llena Retirement Community in 1996 where she served as Secretary of the Residents Association for three years and helped in many other responsibilities. She was an active member of Delta Kappa Gamma, the teachers' honorary society. She leaves many wonderful friends. A memorial service will be held at La Vida Llena, 10501 Lagrima de Oro Road NE, Albuquerque, on Tuesday, April 13, 2010 at 2:00 P.M. with Rev. Linda Baca officiating.
