Obituary for ROYBAL

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Thursday March 25, 2010

Renee Bernadette Roybal August 14, 1962 to March 19, 2010. Our beloved daughter and little sister, Renee, knocked on Jesus' door on Friday, March 19, 2010. Like a valiant soldier, Renee fought ovarian cancer until the end. She prevailed when Jesus opened the door, reached out to her and took her to her eternal peace. She won the battle because no gift could be greater than receiving Jesus. Renee was diagnosed with Stage IV Ovarian Cancer in October of 2007 in Los Angeles, CA. Determined to prolong her life, she immediately returned to Albuquerque to be near her family and to begin treatment at the UNM Cancer Center where she felt so comfortable and cared for. She fell in love with the staff, always speaking highly of them and appreciated them all so much. A year ago, Renee was told that her cancer had progressed and there was no other treatment available. She returned to Los Angeles to seek other possible treatment and ultimately, alternative medicine. In January, Renee accepted that her life had been cut short, but because of her tremendous Catholic faith, she knew that her soul would be saved by our Lord Jesus Christ. She returned to Albuquerque in February 2010 at her request to be with her family at the end of her life. Renee, 47 years old, was born in Albuquerque, NM and graduated from Rio Grande High School in 1980. She lived in Los Angeles, CA for 25 years. There, she was a professional waitress for 20 years and subsequently pursued a career as a nanny, housekeeper, personal assistant or a "do it all" for wealthy families in Los Angeles, whom she considered respectable and fine people. She was preceded in death by her father, Leandro Roybal; and her paternal and maternal grandparents. She was also preceded in death by her cousin and best friend, David Herrera, whom she loved dearly and referred to as her "savior". David and Renee were inseparable since childhood. Renee is survived by her mother, Clara Roybal; her partner of 30 years, Joey Jacquez; two sisters, Sandra Medina and husband, Jim, Louella Rimbert and husband, Robert; four brothers, Leonard "Richard", Jake and wife, Alice, Kenny and Larry; also surviving Renee are her beloved nephews and nieces, Rick (wife Lori), Lisa, Conrad, Ali, Becky, Eli (wife Andrea), Melanie, Kenneth, Nicole and Christopher. Renee also adored her great-nephews and nieces, Jude, Santi, Maria, Megan, Nico, Anthony, and Alexandria. She cared about cancer patients all over the world and prayed for them with devotion. She talked about the pain and suffering she and others were enduring and prayed for a cure for cancer soon, although it may not be in her lifetime. Renee would honor any donations to the UNM Cancer Center. Renee was a simple and humble person, loving Joey, family, friends and even our pets more than anything. Her favorite words were "thank you" and "I love you", forever saying them. Our memories of Renee are of abundance and her presence will remain in our hearts forever. Services will be held at Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 5415 Fortuna Rd. NW on Friday, March 26, 2010. A Rosary will be recited at 10:15 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial immediately following. Private family interment of the cremated remains will take place at a later date. Arrangements by Direct Funeral Services, 2919 4th St. NW. ABQ. 505-343-8008
