Obituary for LUCERO

Lucy Lucero, born May 24, 1914 to Evaristo and Luz (Baca) Lucero, passed away February 9, 2010. She was preceded in death her parents and siblings: Frances Chavez (Alfred), Sophie Sanchez (Herman), Josie Varela (Willie), Jake Lucero (Petrita) and Della Linson. She was an elementary school teacher for over 40 years, mostly at the Los Lunas Elementary Schools. She was a devoted parishioner of San Clemente Parish in Los Lunas where she was a religious Education director and teacher and lector, where the religious education center was named after her. She served as a lector at Holy Rosary Parish in Albuquerque, member of the Blue Army and supporter of the Southwest Franciscan Missions. During her teaching career she was invited to mentor and train teachers in Honduras. She with her mother and sister, Sophie, loved to travel and she shared many stories, especially of her trips to Rome, Israel and other locations special to Catholic history. She was proud of her family history, always eagerly sharing information of Lucero, Baca, Delgado and Romero family ties. Lucy will be remember for her love of church and family. While she had no children of her own all of her nieces and nephews received the benefit of her love, her desire for education and her support. She is survived by her nieces, nephews: Gene and Yvette Varela (who were her recent caregivers), Henry Chavez, Fred (Elizabeth) Chavez , Carmela Chavez, Tito (Mary) Chavez, Jamie Chavez, Juanita Baca (Deacon Rudy), Frank Chavez (Susan), Frank Chavez (Susan), Martin Varela (Francisca), Ramona Varela, Maria Varela, Billy Varela (Mildred), Theresa Varela, David Varela (Gloria), Helen Tafoya (Albert), and Elizabeth Santamaria (Jose). She is also survived by many special cousins. Serving as pallbearers will be Henry Chavez, Jaime Chavez, Martin Varela, Billy Varela, Eugenio Varela and Diego Varela. Honorary Pallbearers will be David Varela and Frank Chavez In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, 417 Agua Fria, Santa Fe, NM, 87501 or Southwest Franciscan Missions, P. O. Box 12395, Albuquerque, NM, 87195. Visitation will be held on Friday, February 12, 2010, 5:00 p.m. followed by a rosary at 7:00 p.m. at Berardinelli Family Chapel. Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, February 13, 2010, 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Rosario Cemetery.
