Obituary for BURGER

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Saturday February 06, 2010

James Scott Burger, known to all his friends and family as Scotty, was born in Philadelphia, PA on January 24, 1921. He grew up in Palmyra, NJ, attended Park College at Parkville, MO where he met his future wife, Ann McDowell. Soon after the U.S. entered WWII, Scotty enlisted in the Navy and served his country well as a naval pilot in the South Pacific. After the war, he and his young wife settled in Maxwell, NM. Later they moved to Las Cruces, NM and finally to Albuquerque where Scotty worked in insurance sales and management. Scotty was a master gardener and some summers he produced enough fruit and vegetables on his small plot to share with his entire neighborhood. He was an avid hunter and expert fisherman who knew all the "best holes" in most of the streams and lakes of NM. He could tell amazing tales of his time in the South Pacific and was an all around entertaining raconteur. Like so many of his generation, he approached life with uncomplaining courage and took the bad with a grain of salt. Scotty genuinely enjoyed people and chose to see the best in them. His "you can do it" attitude gave courage to many. Above all, Scotty loved a good time and his infectious "joie de vivre" is remembered fondly by those who knew and loved him best. He was a good father and a caring grandfather. He was well loved and will be greatly missed. He died swiftly and without pain early Sunday morning January 31, 2010. He is survived by his daughter, Alice and her husband Hilary Arathoon; by two much loved grandsons, Peter Arathoon and Andoe Arathoon and his wife Erin, and by his great grandson Archer.
