Obituary for PFEUFER

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Wednesday January 13, 2010

Lila Armijo Pfeufer. We lost our mother and grandmother on Sunday, January 10, 2010. Lila Armijo Pfeufer was born November 25, 1911, and raised in Albuquerque, living a life full of character, adventure, guidance and nurturing. A comment often made was "she's a very gracious and dignified woman". Her sense of life was extended to her children and grandchild, teaching us love, loyalty and self-respect. Lila attended UNM for two years, but graduated from Northwestern University in 1938 and began her life's journey working in Washington, DC for the Brazilian Aero Commission at the Brazilian Embassy during WWII, traveling throughout Central and South America; living in the Panama Canal Zone where her son Roderick was born. She retired from teaching school (4th grade at Eubank Elementary School) in 1973 and once again began her world travels, ending in 1998. The only place she said she wished she had visited was India. When she wasn't traveling she spent countless hours volunteering for the NM Genealogical Society copying genealogical records and was honored in 2000 for her contributions; and at the Albuquerque Museum Fountain going over photos and identifying them where Lila was honored in 1995 as Volunteer of the Year. She enjoyed making silver jewelry and painting. Lila was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred; son, Roderick; three brothers; and two sisters. She leaves behind two daughters, Lila Ann Vernon (Chattanooga, TN) and Jeanette Bonnell (Salt Lake City, UT); one granddaughter, Catherine Mayo Byars (Brian) (Tucson, AZ); and great-granddaughter, Brooke, whom she loved seeing. Per her request, she will be cremated. A private service will be announced at a later date. Those wishing may donate to the charity of their choice in her name. The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the Zander family (Emily, Louise and Jackie) and Ann and Paul Mossman for their friendship to our mom, the staff at St. Catherine's Rehab Center and nurses of Hospice Compassus. Please visit our online guestbook for Lila at www.RememberTheirStory.com. "And now, the end is near, And so I face the final curtain. My friends, I'll say it clear; I'll state my case of which I'm certain. I've lived a life that's full - I've traveled each and every highway. And more, much more than this, I did it my way.
