Obituary for HUDSON

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Wednesday January 13, 2010

Janet E. Hudson, 85, formerly of Albuquerque, passed away at her home in Visalia, CA., on Jan. 8. She was attended in her final hours by her loving daughters and died peacefully of natural causes. Mrs. Hudson was born Jan. 30, 1924, to Seymour and Wilhelmina Anderson and spent her early years in small-town Minnesota. She graduated with a nursing degree from the University of Minnesota, where she met her future husband, Dr. Heber S. Hudson, on a blind date. The outgoing and vivacious Miss Anderson was a perfect foil for the young Army doctor, who was self diagnosed as painfully shy. Together for 46 years, they traveled the world and raised eight children before enjoying an active semi-retirement. They lived in Minnesota, Indiana, New York, Colorado, Washington, plus twice in California and three times in Germany and New Mexico. They visited the Artic and many exotic places along the way. But they harbored a special love for Albuquerque where they spent more than 20 years. After Dr. Hudson's death in 1992, Mrs. Hudson retained her adventurous spirit and sailed and lived on Washington's Puget Sound at 76 years old. Mrs. Hudson served as an officer in the county Medical Auxiliary and the Hoe Handlers Garden Club and as a docent at the Albuquerque Museum. She was a gourmet chef and an exceptional baker with several wedding cakes and prize-winning sourdough bread to her credit. Renowned for her hospitality and fun-loving spirit, she was a famous hostess. The family home was known as the "Hudson Hotel" due to the parade of guests who paid a visit. At Mrs. Hudson's table, there was always room for another friend. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Jim and Don Anderson, and a sister, Eloise Shaffner; her husband, Dr. Heber S. Hudson; and two sons, Heber S. Hudson III, and Kurt E. Hudson, both of Albuquerque. She is survived by three daughters, Lynn Hudson Kopala of Tarpon Springs, FL.; Kymry Hudson of Visalia; and Tracy Hudson Cohen of Portland, OR.; three sons, Brent Hudson of Portland; Jon Hudson of Albuquerque; and Neff Hudson of San Antonio, TX; and seven grandchildren: Ian Eakin-Hudson, Shannon Hudson and Connor Hudson, all of Albuquerque; Alex and Justine Cohen of Portland; and Nina and Lila Hudson of San Antonio. Other loved ones include nephews John Shaffner of Los Angeles and Geoff Shaffner of Missoula, MT; Mira Hnatyshyn Hudson of San Antonio; Jon Cohen of Portland; Phil Kopala of Tarpon Springs; and Jule Larsen and Joanne Eakin of Albuquerque. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m., January 13, 2010 at St. John Episcopal Church in Tulare, CA. The family will hold a private ceremony in Albuquerque at a later date.
