Obituary for SCHULTZ

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Tuesday January 05, 2010

John (Jack) Thomas Schultz, Sr. September 30, 1924 - January 2, 2010 IN LOVING MEMORY Jack was born in Chicago, Illinois on 9/30/24 to Russel and Hazel Schultz. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Russel; and sister, Jane. Early in life Jack met his soul mate and the love of his life, Loretta (Lori) Irene Kostre. Lori has been his companion and friend since the 1st grade. Being from Chicago, Jack was from early on and continued on throughout life as loyal Bears and Cubs fan. Out of high school he was picked up by his beloved Chicago Cubs as a catcher. He was sent to the Cubs' farm team where he excelled at both catching and hitting. Jack was written up in the Chicago paper as an upcoming star for the Cubs! However, his promising baseball career came to an abrupt halt after being hit in the temple by a wild pitch. After baseball, Jack enlisted in the Marines and served at Camp Pendleton. While serving his country Jack became forever united as one with his long time sweetheart. On June 17, 1944 he married "his" Lori. In 1946 they moved to Albuquerque and purchased the Jolly Knight Restaurant and Lounge. Jack not only made the Jolly Knight a success, but also became loved by and friend with all of the patrons. Along with his love of life, Jack had a love for race horses. He had a long history as an owner of over 25 race horses. He owned the winner of the Westside Futurity at Sunland Park in 1981, making his horse Jack Drawbaugh one of the top horses in NM for the year. No matter how much Jack loved his horses, the Chicago Bears, and the Chicago Cubs there was always a much stronger, deeper, and everlasting love for him.......his family. Jack is survived by his wife, Lori; daughter, Michele M. Munson-Bowman and husband Chuck; son, Jack T. Schultz Jr.; and daughter, Lori Wilborn and husband Guy; six grandchildren: Michael, Geoffrey, Melissa, Michele, Bud, and Greg; six great-grandchildren: Cameron, Caden, Tyler, Colton, Brecken, and Camille. In honor of our beloved husband/father/grandfather there will be a private family rosary and mass. In memory and honor of Jack and his pursuit for the prevention and cure of his disabilitating disease, please send any desired donations to: NATIONAL SHINGLES FOUNDATION 590 Madison Avenue, 21st Floor New York, NY 10022 (212) 222-3390 www.vzvfoundation.org
