Robert H., 79, died Wednesday, December 30, 2009. Bob was born in Amarillo, Texas, on November 15, 1930. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary Kelly Austin of Albuquerque; brother Pal and wife Jane Austin of Clayton, NM; daughter Carol and her husband Dr. George Birks of Pueblo, CO; daughter Cecilia and her husband Christian Andersen of Albuquerque; son Joseph and his wife Rhoanna Austin of Seattle, WA; daughter Mary Kay Austin of Albuquerque; son Robert Austin of Albuquerque; son Patrick and his wife Sharon Austin of Albuquerque; son John Austin of Albuquerque; grandchildren Ryan Andersen and his wife Lauren; Matthew Andersen and his wife Kerri; Christian Austin; Laurie Birks; Cheryl Austin; Brian Birks; David Birks and his wife Katie; Michael Broderick; Nathan Broderick; Katie Andersen; Mariah Austin; and Katie Austin and numerous nieces and nephews. Bob was preceded in death by his parents Claude and Helen Austin; brothers Bill, George, Walter, Charlie and James Austin; and Sister Jean McCorkle. Bob was a member of the Texas National Guard from 1948 to 1949 and served in the U.S. Air Force from 1952 to 1956. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from St. Mary's University in San Antonio, TX, in 1964 and retired from Sandia National Laboratories in 1993 after more than 37 years of service. He was a member of St. Bernadette Catholic Church for 17 years and a founding member of John XXIII Catholic Community. Bob was active in organizing and judging the New Mexico Pageant of bands for more than 20 years. He loved his family and friends, Vallecito Lake. CO and University of Texas football. A rosary and Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated beginning at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 5, 2010 at John XXIII Catholic Community. The family wishes to thank Dr. Gerald Brown , Dr. B. Kulkarni, Patricia Fernandez of Presbyterian Health Services, and the staff of Kaseman Presbyterian Hospice.
