Obituary for MONROE

David Kenneth Monroe, 63, died November 21, 2009 in Tucson, Arizona. David was a physicist who earned a bachelor's degree at North Carolina State University and a PhD at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He was a Vietnam-era veteran who served in the 3rd U.S. Army Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard). He taught physics at Caldwell Community College in Lenoir, NC and Appalachian State University in Boone, NC before moving to Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1984. He lived and worked in Albuquerque until his death. David was a lively, inquisitive, and generous father, brother, and son, and he will be missed by his family: daughter Sarah Monroe (Kurt Grever-Hoover) of Tucson; mother Elsie Monroe of Biscoe, NC; brother Tim Monroe (Helen) of Winston-Salem, NC; sister Carolyn West (John) of Marianna, Florida; sister Laura Harris (David) of Candor, NC; and an extended family of nieces, nephew, aunts and uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, John David Monroe. Sarah and Kurt thank David's good friends and their families for their support during his illness: Albuquerque friends Don Bradley, Bill Filter, Bill Miller, Brad Lyau, Allen Sault, Dave Barr, Amir Shahvar, Andy and Sharon Petney, Richard and Angelica Plass, and Jon Weiss; and Sarah's mother, Dorothy McDuffie of Chattanooga, Tennessee. The family will conduct a graveside service at Bensalem Presbyterian Church in Eagle Springs, NC and a celebration of his life in Albuquerque at a later date.
