Obituary for SCHELBERG

Arthur Daniel Schelberg Born in New York City in 1921, died peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Monday, November 16, 2009. He was 88 years old. Arthur graduated from Princeton University in 1942 where he was part of a working group of physicists and was recruited for the Manhattan Project at a boys' ranch in a remote area of New Mexico. His first few weeks in Los Alamos were spent sleeping on a screened-in porch and driving pickup loads of supplies from Santa Fe to Los Alamos. He soon met Margaret Schoppy and they became the first couple married in Los Alamos at the MP-Theater. In 1946, Arthur and Margaret left Los Alamos so he could pursue graduate studies in nuclear physics and mathematics at the University of Indiana. In 1952, after receiving his doctorate and working briefly in California, he returned to Los Alamos, the place he learned to love, to work for the test division in the newly formed J-16 group. His work took him to Nevada; Eniwetok, Bikini, Christmas and Johnston Islands. He played clarinet and sax in Los Alamos light opera productions. He retired from the Lab in 1982 but continued to work for EG&G and Bechtel until 2001. He was preceded in death by Margaret in 1988; and is survived by his wife, Marie Schelberg; children: John Schelberg and his wife Nancy Akins, Kathleen Balch and her husband Bill Balch and their children, Heather and Travis, and Eileen Schelberg all of Albuquerque, and Anne Lenz and her husband Steve Lenz and their children Nathan and his wife Kate, Marisha, Jeremy, and Tyler of Lincoln, Nebraska; by grandson, Chris Loftfield of Hawaii; and by niece, Anne Marie Sarubin and her husband, Dr. Daniel Sarubin and daughter Danielle and her husband Peter Horn of Allentown, Pennsylvania. Arthur was a member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Los Alamos where all services will be held. A Visitation will be on Wednesday, November 18, 2009 at 6:00 p.m. followed by a Rosary at 7:00. A Funeral Mass will be at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 19, 2009. The family extends heart felt gratitude to the caretakers from Home Instead Senior Care, visiting nurses and hospice care It was because of their care that Dad was able to spend his last months in his home. We also thank Father John Carney, the IHM staff, and all for their prayers and support. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church or Hospice of Los Alamos.
