Obituary for POZENEL

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday November 15, 2009

Patricia F. Pozenel, 77, of Albuquerque, died on Sunday evening, November 8, 2009, following a brief illness and surrounded by family. Patricia was born on September 22, 1932 in Geneva, New York, the only daughter of Anna and Patrick Flynn. Patricia graduated from Syracuse University in 1954 with a B.A. in journalism. In 1957, after passing through Albuquerque with a college girlfriend to find a new life in California, she soon returned to the Duke City to settle and begin a career in newspaper journalism. In 1959, however, she ventured into social work, beginning a 34-year career with the State of New Mexico, principally in child- and foster-care services, retiring in 1993. In September 1959, she married Bill Pozenel, of Ljubljana, Slovenia, who was then known as Albuquerque's "Man Without a Country," because of the support he received from ordinary Albuquerque citizens in winning him political asylum and eventual U.S. citizenship. Bill predeceased Patricia in 1972, and she never remarried. Patricia was much loved by her Syracuse University classmates, by former social services co-workers, by members of her parish, by other parents of her son's classmates at Albuquerque Academy, and by scores of acquaintances whose lives she touched. Patricia was a passionate sports fan, particularly following the teams of Syracuse University, and she was delighted that her adored Yankees won their 27th title. Patricia is survived by her only son, Jay, and his wife, Mary Cronin, and their daughter, Maggie Pozenel, of Croton on Hudson, New York. She is also survived by her beloved Albuquerque "family," the Mummeys and Martinezes. A memorial will be held on Saturday, December 5, 2009, at the St. Thomas Aquinas Newman Center, at 11:00 a.m., with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made either to All Faiths Receiving Home of Albuquerque or to the U.S. Committee for UNICEF. Please visit Patricia's online guestbook at Reflectionoflife.com.
