Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday November 15, 2009

Kathleen "Kat" Elizabeth McGrath, age 95, a resident of Belen, NM, passed away on Friday, November 13, 2009. She was born in Los Angeles, CA. When she was seven, the family moved to Belen where her father was employed by the Santa Fe Railroad. Kat often recalled that the first time she saw Belen it had no paved streets or electricity. After graduating from Belen High School she married Clifton Conant, living first at Casa Colorada, NM, and then settling in Bosque, NM, where he ran the Conant store and was postmaster. Kat worked in banking at First National and then Ranchers State. After retiring, they sold the store and moved to Rio Communities. Kat and Clifton were familiar faces at Sugar Bowl Lanes, where Kat continued bowling into her 80s. She also enjoyed listening to music, dancing, reading and travel. One of the highlights of her travels was a visit to County Cork, Ireland, where her grandfather was born. She was a lifelong member of Our Lady of Belen Parish. She was preceded in death by her husband; three sisters; one brother and a grandson, Edward Peter. Kat is survived by her daughters, Janis Peter and husband, Eddy of Belen and Annette Hardern and Maxine Conant, both of Rio Communities; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren and a special sister-in-law, Clara McGrath of Midland, TX. She is also survived by numerous loving nieces and nephews. A visitation will be held at Romero Funeral Home Chapel, on Tuesday, November 17, at 5:30 p.m. with a rosary to be recited at 6:00 p.m. A final visitation will be held at Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church, on Wednesday, November 18, at 10:30 a.m. with a Funeral Mass to be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Terrace Grove Cemetery.
