Obituary for LOSEE

Arthur Jarrell Losee passed away peacefully early Monday morning, November 10, 2009, after a long illness. Mr. Losee was born on January 18, 1925, to Bernice (Jarrell) and Arthur O. Losee in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He attended the University of Oklahoma where he was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity. He served in the United States Naval Air Corps in World War II. On September 3, 1946, he married Dorothy Ann Inglis in the First Congregational Church in Hampton, Iowa and returned to Oklahoma University where he received his law degree in 1948. Right after graduation, they moved to Artesia to practice law. He practiced oil and gas law for over 50 years, founding the law firm of what is now Losee, Carson & Haas. He was a member of the New Mexico, Oklahoma and American Bar Associations and was listed for many years in the Natural Resources secton of the Best Lawyers in America. In addition, he was the first Chairman of the Disciplinary Board in New Mexico and was largely responsible for implementing this important function of the state Bar. Mr. Losee was a member for many years of the Board of Directors of Holly Corporation. He was Chairman of the El Paso branch of the Dallas Federal Reserve Board. As an active member of his community, he was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, where he served as warden and vestryman for many years, and on the Bishop's Committee for the Fair Share Plan in the Diocese fo the Rio Grande. He served on the Library Board, the Hospital Board, United Way, and the Board of the College of Artesia. He was an avid hunter: quail in Oklahoma where he learned to hunt with his father, ducks in the bogs, pheasent in South Dakota, and quail in the oil fields and ranches of Artesia with his best friends. He loved to golf, and was President of Artesia Country Club and a member of the Alto Lakes Gold and Country Club for many years. He and Dorothy were world travelers, enjoying long days at sea, and driving through Britain and France, sometimes with hilarious results. He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Dorothy; and by two children who loved him dearly, Elizabeth (Buff) and her husband Stephen Garrett, Ann and her husband Mark Pike. He is also survived by their children, who called him Granddaddy: Claire, Georgia, Katie and Stevie; by his great-grandchildren, Lucia and Alex, and by his dear friends (family, really) John and Maryjo Cochran of Troy, Alabama and Shirley Childress of Roswell. He will be terribly missed by his family, including his little dog Charlie. The family wishes to express special thanks to the most caring of caregivers, Connie Lopez and Isaac Acosta, and to Hospice (VistaCare of Carlsbad), all of whom helped Jerry and the family through this difficult time. The family requests memorial contributions to the New Mexico Boys Ranch, VistaCare of Carlsbad, or to a charity of your choice. Memorial services will be held Friday, 2:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Artesia. Rev. Maurice Geldert will officiate at the services.
