Obituary for MILLER

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday November 08, 2009

Ransom Augustus Miller, 95, passed away on November 5, 2009, after a long illness. He was born January 16, 1914, in Cement City, MI, to Samuel Miller and Minnie Douglas Miller. Ransom was survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Hester Miller. He grew up as the son of a country store keeper. Ransom taught in a one-room country school house in Pulaski, MI., to earn money for his tuition to the University of Michigan, from which he graduated. Following graduation he worked in Detroit, MI, at Jam Handy, a maker of commercial films, and for McManus, John and Adams, an advertising agency which later transferred him to their New York City office where he lived for a wonderful four years. To satisfy a long time dream, he left New York in order to attend the restaurant school at Michigan State University. After completing that training, he joined the Fred Harvey Company for whom he acted as relief manager for various restaurants around the country, until finally being transferred to The Airport Terminal Restaurant in Albuquerque. Later, the "dream" having been fulfilled, he returned to advertising at the Ward Hicks Agency, and as a partner at Stoller, Miller, and Swanwick. He retired in 1971 from his own agency, Miller Advertising. Ransom was for all his life a lover of the musical and theatrical arts - opera, symphony, dance, drama. He was an especially devoted follower of The Santa Fe Opera from the time of his arrival in New Mexico, in 1958. His other consuming interests were travel, "fine" dining, and caring for his large collection of roses. Our grateful thanks go out to the kind and caring staff at Las Palomas Care and Rehabilitation Center. At Ransom's request, there will be no formal service at this time. Anyone who may wish to remember him may make a donation to the University of Michigan, 3003 South State Street, Ann Arbor, MI 48109-1288, or The Santa Fe Opera, PO Box 2408, Santa Fe, NM 87504-2408.
