Obituary for BARR

Doris Jane Engelking Barr, 88, a resident of Albuquerque since 1961, died Friday, October 16, 2009. She is survived by her children, The Rev. David Lee Barr and his wife, Patsy Ann, of Jacksonville, FL and The Rev. Rowena Jane Ross, Deacon, and her husband, Ronald Francis Ross, COL USA (Ret) of Albuquerque; grandchildren, LTC Andrew Martyn Barr, US Army, and his wife, Anne Elizabeth, of Manhattan, KS, Robert Stone Barr of Stratford, CT, Michael Carl Ross and his wife, Kelly Dianne, of Albuquerque and Katherine Jane Ross Ortiz and her husband, Benjamin Adam Ortiz, of Albuquerque; great-grandchildren, Madeline Rose Barr, Matthew Martyn Barr, Grace Annabelle Barr, Chloe Stone Barr, Avery Marie Ross, Quinn Michael Ross and Taryn Kaitlen Ortiz; brother, Donald Joseph Engelking, COL USA (Ret), and his wife, Marilyn, of San Antonio, TX. Mrs. Barr was preceded in death by her husband Bernice Stone Barr, COL USAF (Ret). Doris studied vocal performance at the University of TX and sang at social engagements, weddings, and funerals. She lived across the country and in Japan with her husband and was active in Officers' Wives organizations. She was the Director of Red Cross Volunteers at Tachikawa Air Force Base for three years during the Viet Nam War. She was accomplished at dress design, sewing, quilting, knitting, needlepoint, gardening, flower arranging, and cake decorating. Devoted to her church community she sang in choirs, directed children's choirs, served on the Altar Guild, taught Sunday school, and managed the craft workshop and the Holly Berry Fair at St. Mark's-on-the-Mesa Episcopal Church. As a Daughter of the King, she established chapters of the Junior Daughters of the King at St. Mark's and assisted in establishing numerous chapters across the Diocese of the Rio Grande and Province Seven of the Episcopal Church. The Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, October 28, 2009, 10:30 a.m., at Hope+in+the+Desert Episcopal Church with The Rev. Dan Tuton, officiating. Interment will follow at Santa Fe National Cemetery.
