John (Jack) H. Gravel Sr. 86, of Santa Fe passed away Saturday, October 17, 2009. Jack was born to Margaret and Louis Gravel on August 26, 1923 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He was preceded in death by his mother and father; sisters, Peggy and Mary Louise from Minnesota; daughter, Lisa Marie from Minnesota; and son, Thomas of Santa Fe. He leaves behind wife of 55 years, Carol from Minnesota/Santa Fe; brothers: Louis, Frederick and Walter from Minnesota; daughter, Joyce from Washington; sons: Greg and John and wife Carol of Santa Fe; grandson Burke; and granddaughters: Cassie and Carley, all from Santa Fe. Jack was involved in several businesses after moving to New Mexico in 1968. He purchased his first Dairy Queen in Albuquerque and later moved to Santa Fe in 1970 where he built the Dairy Queen on Cerrillos Rd. Jack was known in Santa Fe for owning and operating Dairy Queens in Santa Fe and throughout NM in the 1970's, 1980's and 1990's. He later partnered in a business building numerous motels across NM. Jack and Carol were snow birds spending winters on a lake at a second home in Arizona City, Arizona. Jack loved golfing, boating, fishing and was an avid Minnesota Twins and Vikings fan. A Rosary to be held at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 22, 2009 at St. John the Baptist Church located at 1301 Osage Avenue, Santa Fe, NM. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, October 23, 2009 at St. John the Baptist Church. Burial Services will be held immediately following the mass services on Friday at Memorial Gardens located at 417 Rodeo Rd. Santa Fe, NM. A family gathering and reception will follow.
