Obituary for HOLLAND

Laurence Martin "Marty" Holland, 79, passed away in Los Alamos on Wednesday, October 14, 2009, after a battle with cancer. Marty was preceded in death by his parents, Laurence B. and Gertrude Hays Holland; as well as his brother, John Holland; and sister, Harriett Barrett. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis B. Holland; as well as his children: daughter, Ann DiPlacito and husband Dennis of Irvine, CA; daughter, Caroline Beatty and husband Robert of Riverside, CA; and son, Greg Holland and wife Tanya of Stafford, VA. He is also survived by his five grandchildren: granddaughter, Kellie Johnston and husband Kyle of Irvine, CA; granddaughter, Katherine DiPlacito of Irvine, CA; grandson, Andrew Bassett of Riverside, CA; and granddaughter, Ryan Holland and grandson Reese Holland, both of Stafford, VA. In addition, he is survived by several nieces and nephews. Marty was born on March 16, 1930 in Omaha, Nebraska. He served in the Air Force from 1948 through 1949. He received a Bachelor of Science in Natural Science in 1955 and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1958 from Colorado State University. Married in 1959, Marty and Phyllis moved to Los Alamos in June of 1960. Marty practiced veterinary medicine there from 1960 until 1966. From 1966 to 1991, Marty worked for Los Alamos National Laboratory. Marty was active in the Los Alamos community. He was a member of the Lion's Club and the Sheriff's Posse in the 1960's. During the 1970's, he served as a member of the Los Alamos County Health Advisory Board. He was twice elected to the Los Alamos County Council, serving from 1973 through 1976, and was Chairman in 1974 and 1976. He was elected and served as Los Alamos County Municipal Judge from 1987 through 1993. He also served on the Los Alamos Council on Alcoholism, where he was President from 1992 through 1995. Marty was honored with the Living Treasure Award in April of 2009. At the time of his death, Marty served as a member of the Friends of the Senior Center Board, as well as the Los Alamos Retirement Community (LARC) Board, including three terms as President. During his tenure on the LARC Board, he played a key role in the planning and construction of the Aspen Ridge Assisted Living Center. Marty was a member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church during his residence in Los Alamos. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, October 20, 2009 at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church at 10:00 a.m. followed by burial at Guaje Pines Cemetery at 1:30 p.m. In Lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to VISITING NURSES SERVICE, P.O.
