Obituary for HOLTZMAN

Dr. Saul Charles Holtzman, 91, of Dunwoody, GA passed away on Sunday, September 13, 2009. Dr. Holtzman, originally of Boston, MA, was a psychiatrist, a veteran of the United States Army, and a long standing member of the Army Reserves. After WWII and the Korean War and stateside tours in Tennessee, Georgia, and Massachusetts, Dr. Holtzman moved his family to St. Petersburg Beach, Florida in 1956 where he worked initially at the Veteran's Administration, but soon opened his own psychiatric practice. In 1974, he was called back to active duty by the Army and completed two tours. The first was as Chief of Psychiatry at the 97th General Hospital in Frankfurt, Germany and then as Chief of Community Mental Health Activities at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. After Hawaii, Dr. Holtzman retired again from active duty and moved his family to Lebanon, Pennsylvania where he spent two years as Chief of Psychiatric Services for the VA Medical Center in Lebanon. He and his wife then moved to New Mexico where he served as Chief of Inpatient Psychiatry at the VA Medical Center in Albuquerque until he retired. In 2008, he and his wife moved to Dunwoody to be closer to family. Throughout his career, Dr. Holtzman received numerous awards and recognition for his outstanding service from the military, the Veteran's Administration, and as a civilian in private practice; he was also a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. He was an avid sports fan, loved his Boston Red Sox, and won several regional and state table tennis championships during his retirement in New Mexico. Dr. Holtzman was a devoted husband and loving father and grandfather. He leaves behind his wife, Mildred Holtzman of Dunwoody, to whom he was married for 62 years; daughter and son-in-law, Deborah Holtzman and Rick Rubinson of Dunwoody; grandchildren, Max Rubinson, Emily Rubinson, Paul Rubinson, and Claude Rubinson; daughter, Kimberly Holtzman of Los Angeles, California; daughter, Karen Holtzman of Coconut Creek, Florida, and daughter and son-in-law, Sara and Rob Page of England. Arrangements were made by Dressler's Jewish Funeral Care. Dr. Holtzman, having achieved the rank of Colonel, was buried with full military honors at the Georgia National Cemetery.
