Obituary for MURPHY

Ila Elois Murphy, born January 14, 1922 to Morton Smith and Grace Bowles Smith in Harrison County, Texas, finished her earthly journey suddenly and unexpectedly in her home on September 15, 2009. She is survived by her son Maurice H. Murphy, Jr. of Albuquerque, New Mexico; her daughter Ann Murphy Peck and her husband Robert Charles Peck of Houston, Texas; her granddaughters Megan Ann Peck of Austin, Texas and Amy Peck Horton and husband Roger of Houston, Texas; and two great-grandchildren Jessica Lynne Horton and Nicholas Charles Horton. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother Rev. William Edward Smith; and her loving husband Dr. Maurice H. Murphy. She was known as Lois, Mammaw, Elwa and Mama; she had many names for her cherished roles. She graduated from Marshall High School in Marshall, TX, attended the College of Marshall (now East Texas Baptist University) and graduated from Texas State College for Women (now Texas Women's University). Elois' early career included working as a church youth director in Los Angeles and then worked in the editorial offices at The Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. After marriage, she and her husband returned to Marshall, Texas, where he practiced medicine and they reared their family. In 1961, Elois and Maurice moved to Mountain Lakes, New Jersey. Elois taught in the Mountain Lakes, New Jersey school system until her retirement. She was a strong believer in and dedicated her career to education and the theater arts. She belonged to the Madison Baptist Church in Madison, NJ. She moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1992 and was a member of the Sandia Presbyterian Church. Memorial services will be held Monday, September 21, 2009, 2:00 p.m., at Welch Funeral Home, 4619 Judson Rd. Longview, TX. Friends may visit from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorial services will be held Saturday, October 3, 2009, 11:00 a.m., at Sandia Presbyterian Church, 10704 Paseo del Norte NW, Albuquerque.
