Obituary for SCHAEFER

Howard Robert Schaefer, 89, a resident of Albuquerque, died Sunday, June 21, 2009. Howard was born September 4, 1919 in Asbury Park, NJ. He joined the Merchant Marines at age 16 and sailed to Brazil. A veteran of World War II, he served for five years as a Yeoman 2nd Class in the US Coast Guard. He served aboard the USS Hunter Liggitt and saw battle in the Solomon Islands, Fiji, Tonga Taboo and Guadalcanal. Following the war, he went to work for the Prudential Insurance Company in New York City. In 1948, he moved his family to Albuquerque where he also worked for the Prudential Life Insurance Company. In 1949, he enlisted with the 188th Fighter Squadron of the New Mexico Air National Guard. In 1950, he obtained employment with the Albuquerque Post Office. Other employments include the Public Service Company of New Mexico, ACF Industries and the City of Albuquerque's Purchasing Department in 1965 where he remained until his retirement in 1982. Howard is survived by his wife of 67 years, Shirley C. Schaefer; and two children, Howard R. Schaefer and Lorraine S. Farrell, both of Albuquerque; four grandchildren, Brett, Chris and Lindsay Schaefer of Albuquerque, and Mike Farrell of Leesburg, VA; daughter-in-law, Laura Schaefer; and two great-grandchildren, Ella and Makenna Schaefer of Albuquerque. Services will be held Thursday, June 25, 2009, 10:00 a.m., at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel.
