Obituary for WINTERS

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday May 24, 2009

Kari Lee Winters, born February 28, 1951, passed away suddenly on Monday, May 18, 2009. She is survived by her mother, Leona Winters of MI; her goddaughter Krystal Javien and husband Joe of CA; special friends Gary Rhode and Wuffy of CA, Jenn Sandstrom, Joann Valentine, Vicki Sandstrom, Lexi Kelly of NM and Darlene Arden of MA; and a lifetime of friends and homemade family. Kari spent many years as a psychiatric nurse at UCLA. She moved to Albuquerque in the winter of 2006. She began to write articles for various pet publications such as Cat Fancy, The Pet Press and others. Kari spent much of her life helping animal welfare and rescue operations in CA and NM, working with The Amanda Foundation, Southern California Siamese Rescue and most recently with Albuquerque Kennel Kompadres and Save a Mexican Mutt. She was an advocate for animal welfare and protection, working to help better the lives of animals everywhere. She was an active foster parent for animals in need, opening her home and giving of herself selflessly. She will be missed by animals and humans alike. In lieu of flowers a donation to Albuquerque Kennel Kompadres or The Ricky Fund at The Winn Foundation would be greatly appreciated.
