Obituary for LAPOINTE

Deborah K. LaPointe, 56, passed away peacefully Tuesday, May 19, 2009, surrounded by her family and friends. Deb is survived by her two sons, Tyler and Zachary LaPointe of Albuquerque; her father, Kenneth Cooper of Marengo, Illinois; her mother-in-law, Judy LaPointe of Las Cruces; two sisters, Jo Anne Brackmann of Marengo, Illinois and Jane Murtaugh and husband, Walt, of St. Charles, Illinois; numerous nieces and nephews who include Corey, Lori, C.J., Alexandra, Caleb, Craig, Abby, Mia and Cindy Brackmann, and Michael and Megan Murtaugh; and many caring and loving friends. She was preceded in death by her mother, Irene Cooper, of Marengo, Illinois. Deb was born November 2, 1952, in Monmouth, Illinois. Following high school graduation she attended and graduated from Illinois State University (1975), Northern Illinois University (1978), and with a Ph.D. from University of New Mexico with distinction (2003) in Organizational Learning and Instructional Technologies (OLIT). Deb's diverse and interesting career included Director of Court Reporting Program (1994-97), Interim Director of Distance Learning (1997-99) at Albuquerque TVI; Graduate Teaching Associate (2001-03) College of Education, Adjunct Faculty (2003-04) College of Education at University of New Mexico, Assistant Professor and Assistant Director of Education Development (2004-2009) at University of New Mexico Health Sciences Library Center and Informatics. Additionally Deb received a fellowship to the Edith Cowan University Visiting Research Fellowship School of Computer & Information Science in Perth, Australia (2004). Deb's passion included learning with new technologies in the traditional and virtual classrooms and for collaboration across distances with colleagues on research projects. Envisioning learning in the future with technology and empowering those who did not have access to learning in other ways is what Deb taught, believed in, and practiced. A memorial service in Deb's honor will be held Saturday, May 23, 2009, at 2:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church on 4th and Lead Streets in Albuquerque with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made out to the Deborah LaPointe Scholarship Fund, OLIT Program, College of Education, MS350 at the University of New Mexico, 87131.
