Obituary for SCHOEPPNER

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday May 17, 2009

Janet Montoya Schoeppner. Janet was the best-the best wife, daughter, sister, friend, nina, teacher and mentor. Janet was incomparable in life and irreplaceable for us all. The quiet wisdom that Janet modeled for us all is only one of the many things everyone loved about her. She had a way of making our lives seem doable, understandable and important. You felt like you were the center of her universe whether you were her student, her colleague or a family loved one. Janet is the daughter of Roger and Esther Montoya. Some called her Jessie-named after her grandmother-one of three Jessies in the Montoya family. They were very proud of her and her accomplishments and she deeply loved them. Janet was wife to John, sister to Donna and Joseph, tia to Joaquin, Mandi and Joseph, a sister in law to Therese Schoeppner and Jerry Schoeppner and wife Carol Salazar, Janet was godmother to Monica, Adelina, Joaquin, Jonathan, Joseph and E.J. and teacher to hundreds of students and colleagues whose lives she touched in unforgettable profound ways. Janet grew up in Albuquerque; a 1979 Bulldog graduate, and later received her Bachelors and Masters from UNM. She started teaching in 1984 at Eugene Field then taught at Longfellow, Lew Wallace, UNM and most recently at Adobe Acres. While upholding her professional duties as an educator, she has worked tirelessly in her union to share her teaching knowledge and expertise with hundreds of teachers, enabling them to start on their own professional journey and attempt to emulate her astounding ability with both kids and adults. Everyone admired her quiet and powerful thoughtfulness. She could sit and listen to every point of view in a room and then in a quiet and calm way cut to the bottom line of every issue with an insightful perspective and thoughtful solution. She was never been afraid to fight for what is right. Janet valiantly fought cancer for almost 20 years with dignity, grace and courage. She never wanted anyone to worry about her, yet she worried and cared or all of us. Her powerful grace leaves us all richer but wanting-wanting more time to love her and to be loved by her. A traditional Catholic Rosary will be held at St. Charles Tuesday, May 19th at 7:00 p.m. The funeral mass will be held Wednesday morning at 11:00 a.m. followed by an interment at Mt Calvary. Later this summer, the Albuquerque Teachers Federation and friends will hold a special celebration of Janet's life for the many whose lives she touched. Pallbearers are Joseph Montoya, Diego Arencon, Jerry Schoeppner, Joaquin Schoeppner, Noel Orquiz, and Eddie Gomez. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be sent to the UNM Cancer Center. Those who wish to send condolences may do so at www.danielsfuneral.com. Janet is in the care of: Garcia Mortuary 717 Stover Ave. SW Albuquerque, NM 87102 (505) 243-5222
