Obituary for ABEYTA

Isabel M. Abeyta, born March 6, 1922 passed away peacefully in the company of her daughter and caregivers on May 14, 2009. Although she suffered from the degenerative effects of Alzheimer's disease, Isabel managed her illness with dignity and grace. Born in Montezuma, NM to Apolonio and Teresita Mares she was a long time resident of Grants, NM until moving to Albuquerque in 2006. Isabel is survived by her daughter Erika and husband Leo Rivera; sister Minnie Mares; granddaughters Christina and Monica, great-granddaughters Isabel and Lauren; numerous nieces and nephews, as well as by her devoted, caring and loving caregivers Diane Gonzales, Karen Lowney and Maria Gonzalez. She is preceded in death by her husband Macario; daughter Maxine Gutierrez; and brother Miguel Mares. Isabel earned a Bachelor's and Master's degree from Highlands University and devoted 43 years to teaching, a profession she regarded as a true vocation. Throughout the course of her career, she instructed hundreds of second graders in the public schools and also taught Catechism for many years. She was a Charter Member of the Grants Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma. Foremost in her life was her faith and devotion to the Catholic faith. She will be laid to rest in Grants on Monday, May 18, 2009. Father Alberto Arvillo of St. Theresa Parish will lead Services commencing with the reciting of the Rosary at 9:30 a.m. immediately followed by Mass. For all those who knew Isabel would know that she was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and a faithful and loyal friend. The family thanks and acknowledges the entire staff at Heritage Hospice for their support and guidance. French Mortuary is entrusted to handle the arrangements.
