Obituary for ORTEGA

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Monday April 20, 2009

Carlos The sun was out today as God embraced a timeless soul. His was a marked passing with a quiet fortitude that was a reflection of his life. Carlos Ortega was born in the land of Arabela, New Mexico. It was a still, beautiful land that reflected in his eyes as he watched and listened to his family grow. He was never one for words, but his love was as deep as the heritage he passed on to his great grandchildren. He left for his journey among his loving family in a home that he built with his hands. It was a home whose cornerstone was chiseled from a quarry of love and decency. It is this legacy he leaves for his children and grandchildren. It takes great courage to exist through so many decades in a stoic and ambivalent world that seems to both embrace and repel us in its loving care with every new day and challenge. "Tata" had that tenacious soul and a depth of courage this generation may never understand or be able to comprehend. He was in the most hardened sense of the word a true man, and in the tenderest sense of the words husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend. By E.S. Carlos Ortega, 91, of Albuquerque was preceded in death by wife of 66 years Josefita; granddaughters, Jennifer and Tina. Survivors include two sons, Carlos Jr. and Lou Sanchez, Juan Ortega, daughter Carmen and husband David Chavez. Grandsons John Vincent Chavez and wife Monica, Matthew Ortega, Tulsa, Ok., and Mitchell Ortega, Anchorage, Alaska; great-grandsons Gannon, Logan and Aden Chavez, sister, Rose Brunson, T or C. Constant weekly visitors friend Ernest Guillen and nephew JoRay and JoAnn Ortega and many other surviving nieces, nephews and friends that were all a part of "Tata's" 91 years. Carlos retired from Sandia Labs at the age of 55. Early retirement gave him the opportunity to spend time with his beloved family, home and livestock which were all his pride and joy. He especially enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Rosary will be held Monday April 20, 2009 at Gate of Heaven Chapel, 7500 Paseo del Norte N.E., 821-0800 at 10:00 a.m. and Burial M (505) 228-1040 Mass to follow.
