Obituary for CORDOVA

Joe L. Cordova, 84, was born in Albuquerque, NM on February 22, 1925 and he passed away April 3, 2009. He lived in Albuquerque until he was 17, when he enlisted in the Army to serve his country during World War II. He fought in the Pacific theatre and served in the Philippines, New Zealand, New Guinea and Australia. When he returned from the war, he lived in various places across New Mexico until he married Esther Jiron and settled in Bernalillo, NM to raise his family. Joe is preceded in death by his wife Esther Cordova; son Joey Cordova and son-in-law Kelle Harrison. He is survived by his children, Josephine Hinojos (Luis), Jerry Cordova (Wendy), Dee Ann Quintana (Kenny), Carol Cordova-Martinez (Chris), Elizabeth Harrison, Antoinette Ross (Jim), Kathryn Felker (Paul) and step-son Juan Montoya (Anna); his grandchildren, Celeste Baca, Yvette Mendoza, Juan Carlos Quintana, Jose Luis Hinojos, Mariela Hinojos, Desiree Cordova, and Joey Cordova; great-grandchildren, Dominic, Leonard, Jose Miguel, Alexander, Joaquin and Isaac; and sisters, Rose Anaya, Viola Lujan and Emma Gonzalez and multiple nieces and nephews. Joe was a proud veteran of the United States Army, was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and was an honored and cherished father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and friend. He was a hard worker throughout his life and worked in various fields such as construction, security, southwest art and culture, as well as in public service with the Sandoval Country Sheriffs department. He will always be remembered for his resilient spirit and tenacity, his strong sense of responsibility and honor, the importance of his children's education, his candid honesty, and his clever and witty sense of humor. He loved to garden, watch sports, follow politics, visit with his friends and family, and enjoyed playing at the casinos in his later years. Joe L. Cordova will be sorely missed, but will live on forever through the values he instilled in his family, from the memories he left behind and the impressions he made on the lives he touched. The Rosary will be held at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Bernalillo on Tuesday, April 7, 2009 at 7 p.m. The Mass of Celebration will be held on Wednesday, April 8, 2009, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Bernalillo.
