Obituary for EVANS

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Friday April 03, 2009

Joan Inez Evans, 83, passed away on Saturday, March 28, 2009. Joan was born in Bremerton, Washington, on January 1, 1926, spending early life with parents Frank and Rose Lindsey, and sister Goldie. She loved Washington State, telling stories of Hood Canal and gooey ducks. She worked at the Bremerton Naval Shipyard, then at Grand Coulee Dam. In 1950, Joan moved to Albuquerque for health reasons, with her parents and her daughter Christine. She started her 30+ year secretarial career on Kirtland Air Force Base and bought her own house. In 1951, she met and married her husband Thomas O. Evans (T.O.), and son Lindsey was born the next year. T.O. was a Navy man, so the family moved often, living in San Diego, Baltimore, Japan, and finally back in Albuquerque on Candelaria Road in the North Valley. Like many of Joan's generation, she would make sacrifices for her country and her family, but Joan could also be counted on to take the neighborhood kids to Dukes baseball games. Joan was fun-loving and social - she loved bridge, traveling and helping people in need. She was active at her church, Highland Baptist, working at the church's food pantry. As her friends got older, Joan helped many through their end of life challenges, brightening their days with her caring spirit. During recent years, facing her own declining health while caring for a husband with dementia, Joan faced each day "one day at a time." Anyone who knew Joan will always remember her room-lighting smile and her upbeat attitude. Joan is survived by daughter, Christine Dragics; son, Lindsey Evans and wife, Elaine; granddaughters, Michelle Dragics and Jennifer Reddington and husband, Ray Richardson; grandson, Sean Reddington; and nieces, Sharon Coon and Vicki Black. Services will be held Saturday, April 4, 2009, 11:00 a.m., at Highland Baptist Church, 417 Palomas Dr. SE with interment to follow at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul Blvd. NE. Friends may visit French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel, Friday, April 3, 2009, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to The American Heart Foundation, 2201 San Pedro NE, Building 2, Suite 102, 87110, or the American Lung Foundation, 7001 Menual Blvd. NE, Suite 1-A, 87110.
