Obituary for BERNARDI

Patricia Anne Bernardi, nee Manley, passed away on March 19, 2009. Patricia was born November 18, 1938, and raised in Rising Sun, Indiana and Cincinnati, Ohio. She graduated from Withrow High School, Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1956 and attended the University of Cincinnati. Patricia graduated in 1961 from Our Lady of Cincinnati, Ohio, which became Edgecliff College, now part of Xavier University. She married Mr. Dominic J. Bernardi, Jr. on June 23, 1962 (46 yrs.). Her parents Dr. Charles Norman Manley and Leah Kathleen Kirk Manley preceded her in death. She is survived by her devoted husband, Dominic J. Bernardi, Jr of Albuquerque, NM, her loving children, a daughter, Leah R. Sundquist of Canby, OR and husband David; son, Dominic J. Bernardi III and wife Maureen Smith of Alexandria, VA; one sister, Myra Loyce (Manley) Riefle and husband Glenn of Cincinnati, OH; brother, Norman Kirk Manley, Sr. and wife Bonnie of Cumberland Gap, TN; and her mother-in-law Mrs. Bruna Bernardi of Pasadena, CA; and granddaughter, Nana, was very special to, Brianna R. Sundquist. She also leaves two nieces, two nephews and one great-nephew. Patricia Anne lived a full life emulating the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority creed of service, education, and being humble in her successes. Besides being a full time loving mother, Pat spent 31 years of teaching, mentoring, being a mother and dedicated service to many students of The Summit Country Day School in Cincinnati, Ohio, Morehead, Lincoln Middle and Franklin High Schools in El Paso, TX and retired in 1995. During her teaching career, she volunteered on several committees of Special Education services for the El Paso Independent School District. Pat was also a long-time member of the Kappa Chapter, The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International of professional educators. "Mrs. Bernardi" as many of her students called her, always found the good in everyone, told all children that the word "Can't" is not in the vocabulary, and to always "try." She strove for the best; expected the best and received the best; always hugging and loving the children she taught. Her happiest teaching moments were when one of her Special education students mainstreamed or became successful adults. Pat was an active Girl and Boy Scout leader for many years, including a large troop of young girls. While living in El Paso, TX, Pat was a member of the Officers Wives Club of Ft. Bliss and volunteered for the American Red Cross, Young Matrons Club, Women's Club, Art Show Committee member of the Southwestern International Livestock Show and Rodeo, and the El Paso Rehabilitation Center's annual Christmas Street "Festival of Trees" decorating trees and other countless activities associated with assisting children. In Albuquerque she was an active member of Art Committee of the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra's annual Vintage Albuquerque Fine Wine and Art Auction and lastly, and the Assistance League of Albuquerque. She was our foundation and she was "the greatest of all things". Rosary Service will be held at French's Mortuary, Lomas Chapel, at 6:00 p.m., March 27, 2009. A Mass of Resurrection celebrating her life will be held at the Aquinas Newman Catholic Center at the University of New Mexico, 1815 Las Lomas, at 10:00 a.m. on March 28, 2009 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Family interment service will be at the Santa Fe National Cemetery, Santa Fe, New Mexico.
