Obituary for GILL

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Tuesday February 03, 2009

Rene Yvette Gill died January 25, 2009, in Dallas, Texas, from heart disease complicated by chronic health conditions. She was born April 18, 1925 in Beaumont-les-Autels, France. She met her future husband, Tony Gill, in Paris after WW II, in which he served as a bomber pilot. Rene came to America in 1947, and they married on May 3, 1947, in Shelburn, Indiana. After their wedding, Tony rejoined the military and they moved frequently over the next decades, as Tony was assigned to air bases in Columbus, Georgia; Paris, France; Wiesbaden, Germany; Oklahoma City; Colorado Springs; Wethersfield, England; and finally, Albuquerque, where he retired. Tony and Rene have three children and three grandsons, whom they both adored. Rene enjoyed cooking, knitting, computer games, and playing cards. For years, she and Tony loved going to horse races and traveling in their motorhome. After Tony's death in 2004, Rene continued to travel for important occasions, despite her poor health. She attended her grandsons' weddings in Virginia and Minnesota. In November, she achieved her dream of returning once again to France to visit her family there. Rene met enormous challenges with tremendous courage and determination. Friends and family will also remember her quick wit and sense of humor, especially in tough times. She is survived, and will be greatly missed, by her children: Pam Gill (and Chris Boyle) of South Beach, OR; Sandy (and Gary) White of Dallas, TX; and Phil (and Jodi) Gill of Billings, MT; and three grandsons: Rob (and Julie) Crawford III of Plymouth, MN; Michael (and Kat) Crawford of Wiesbaden, Germany; and Lt. Greg Crawford, USMC, of Kingsville, TX; and numerous French relatives. A funeral Mass is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. on Monday, February 9, 2009 at St. Bernadette's Catholic Church, 11401 Indian School Rd NE, with a reception afterwards. Interment for both Tony and Rene will follow at 1:00 PM at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe. The family will welcome visitors at Rene's home on Monday evening. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations in Rene's memory be made to the Humane Society of the American Lung Association.
