Obituary for SLATER

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday January 25, 2009

Edward John Slater, loving husband and father of Coronado, CA, formerly of Albuquerque, NM and Guymon, OK passed away peacefully among family members at home on December 28, 2008. He was 83. On Valentines Day in 1951, he married Jere Lancaster. Ed lived life to the fullest and above all enjoyed his family and friends. He also received great joy from helping others less fortunate by volunteering his time and efforts to a number of organizations that were dedicated to seeing to the needs of others. Both Ed and Jere were active in church organizations wherever they were living. As a Navy veteran, lifelong Rotarian, avid snow skier, photographer, United Methodist Lay Witness volunteer, school board member, Red Cross Blood Drive chairman and Meals on Wheels volunteer, Ed always found time for family. Having a 30-year career in journalism, Ed was involved in radio and newspaper as well as television. If you needed to know what was going on, Ed was the man to talk to. All who knew and loved him will miss Ed's zest for life, wonderful laugh and encouraging heart. He is survived by his devoted and loving wife, Jere, daughters Beverly and husband Jim Fowler of Guymon, OK, Courtney and Jerry Brown of Coronado, CA, and son Lan and wife Charlotte Slater of Angel Fire, NM. He was also blessed with ten grandchildren, Jef and Starla Fowler, Scott and Julie Fowler, Matthew Fowler, Lisa and Rae Rice, Jerry and Rene Ward, Mike and Christina Ward, Derek and Betsy Brown, Amy and Tom Dull, Jessie Brown and Shawn Slater, and 21 great-grandchildren. Also surviving Ed was a sister, Norma Jean Frevert. Private services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Ed's memory to Dunaway Manor Building Fund, PO Box 831, Guymon, OK 73942.
