Obituary for JOHNSON-CORLIS

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Saturday January 17, 2009

Claudia Jo Johnson-Corlis, 66, a resident of Albuquerque since 1964, lost her year long battle with brain cancer Sunday, January 12, 2009 and moved on to a better place. Claudia was a fighter to the end. She was known for her no-nonsense style of communication and honest opinions. A wonderful mother and grandmother (affectionately known as "Granny" after the Beverly Hillbillies TV show character), she will be sorely missed. The matriarch of the Johnson-Corlis family, her brand of family loyalty and leadership will be hard to emulate. Always one to offer support to others and "rally the troops" to help out family and friends in times of need, Claudia was a force to be reckoned with. "Let's get organized" was her mantra and "I know I'm beautiful, tell me I'm efficient" was her personal motto. She is survived by her husband, Norman Corlis; her mother, Betty Newman; her sons, Todd Johnson and wife, Kristin (with grandchildren Ryan and Maura) and Joel Johnson and wife, Tracy; her daughters, Kimberly Harrell and husband, Mark (with grandson Grady), Jessica Martinez and husband, James (with grandchildren Dru Bailey and Thomas), Debi Corlis, and Tom Gay, all of the Albuquerque area; brother and sisters include Ronald Newman and wife, Pam of Westcliffe, CO, Nancy Casillas of Las Cruces, NM, and Amy Suttles and husband, Erik of Pagosa Springs, CO. Claudia was preceded in death by her father, Edwin Newman. She was a Licensed Independent Social Worker and had a successful private practice in this field. In addition, she served on numerous boards, committees, and associations in the field of psychiatric social work. She held a Bachelor of Arts degree from Washburn University in Topeka, KS and a Master of Social Work from Arizona State University. Memorial Services will be held on Sunday, January 18, 2009, 1:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, Wyoming Chapel. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society, 10501 Montgomery Blvd. NE, Suite 300, 87111. The family would also like to issue a "Special Thanks" to her caregivers, Annette Casaus and Gerri Saavedra, without whom the family would not have been able to function over the last year. We greatly appreciate your wonderful care and attention. Please visit our online guestbook for Claudia at RememberTheirStory.com French 7121 Wyoming Blvd. NE (505) 823-9400
