Obituary for SPITZ

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday December 07, 2008

Alice Helstein. After 88 joyous years, Alice Helstein Spitz died on December 4, 2008. Born in Hibbing, Minnesota, Alice had an enormous thirst for knowledge. She served in the Southern European Theater as a frontline surgical nurse during World War II. Later, she considered herself lucky to have lived in many different places. Her perspective on life was based on curiosity and knowledge. Alice loved to study the diverse cultures around her through exploration, reading and travel. And, one of her greatest joys was sharing what she had learned. In her life's explorations she volunteered to work in hospitals, libraries, public schools, animal humane associations, and museums. In short, Alice devoted her life to serving and helping others. Alice was preceded in death by her husband and life-companion of 63 years, LJ; her beloved sisters, Jimmy and Red; brothers-in-law, and many loved family and friends. She is survived by her loving children, Allan, Carol, Linda, Gary, and Charles; her sister-in-law, nieces, nephews, family and friends too numerous to mention. In light of Alice Helstein Spitz's dedication to community service, please do not spend flowers; instead, consider a charitable donation in her name to the Esther Bone Rio Rancho Public Library, 950 Pinetree Road SE, Rio Rancho, NM 87124 or the New Mexico Animal Association, 615 Virginia SE, Albuquerque, NM 87108. Family and friends will be celebrating Alice's life at the Chamisa Hills Golf and Country Club in Rio Rancho, on Friday, January 2, 2009 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
