Obituary for PARZYCK

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday November 16, 2008

Thomas Edward Parzyck, 58, died on Saturday, November 8, 2008. He was born in Detroit, MI, of first generation Polish immigrants. Tom attended Sacred Heart Seminary for high school. He graduated from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, with a Bachelor of Science degree, and received a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, in 1975. Tom came to Albuquerque in 1975 as an intern in Internal Medicine at UNM, followed by a residency in Internal Medicine. He was Chief Medical Resident at UNM from 1978-1979. He was a Fellow in Pulmonary Disease at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center 1979-1980, and then became a Pulmonary Fellow at UNM. Tom was both an Instructor in Medicine and a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine at UNM between the years of 1980 and 1994. Dr. Parzyck was in private practice with Southwest Pulmonary Specialists and later PHS PMG Pulmonary in Albuquerque. In 1994 he researched, lobbied for, and initiated the Presbyterian Hospital Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program. Dr. Thomas Parzyck was a dedicated physician with an unwavering commitment to excellence, and he was an outspoken advocate for patient care. Tom was a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, American College of Physicians, American Thoracic Society, American Medical Association, American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation, and American College Chest Physicians. He was an Emergency Room Physician at BCMC and an Emergency Medical Officer at the United States Air Force Hospital in Oklahoma. Tom is survived by his wife, Beverly; his son, Christopher; his mother, Eleanor Parzyck (Dearborn Heights, MI); his brothers, Rodger (Kalamazoo, MI), David (Detroit, MI), Kevin (LaGrange, IL), and Tim (Paso Robles, CA); and his sister, Patricia Ann Pathuis (Scottsdale, AZ). He was predeceased by his father, Frank Edward Parzyck. In his mid-thirties he went to the University of Pittsburg for a liver transplant, due to an idiopathic disease. The first transplant failed within a week and another match was found and he was re-transplanted. At that time his insurance carrier considered liver transplantation "experimental" and refused medical coverage. The Albuquerque medical community rallied and donated funds to pay for his transplant medications for many years until his coverage was finally approved. From that time until his death he battled cancer, had a total knee replacement, MDS, until he succumbed to cancer on November 8, 2008. Thomas Parzyck loved life. He did not complain of his illnesses, he followed his faith, and never gave up. He was passionate about the outdoors; he loved hiking, camping, sailing, and was an accomplished fly fisherman. He was an exceptional gardener, was as active in the Boy Scouts as his health permitted, and he was an avid reader. Above all, Tom loved his family. He was a dedicated husband, father, son, brother, friend, and physician. The family would like to thank Paul "Ed" Pierce, MD, Tom's physician, who cared for Tom's health-related issues for over three decades. Beverly and Christopher are forever indebted to Clark Haskins, MD, Tom's lifelong friend, colleague, and physician, who provided outstanding care until the end of Tom's life. The family would also like to thank many of the other physicians in the Albuquerque medical community for their expertise, friendship, support, compassion, and prayers during his extended illness. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Monday, November 17, 2008, 2:00 p.m., at Aquinas Newman Center, 1815 Las Lomas NE. For those attending, additional parking is available at the UNM lot at Lomas Blvd. and University Blvd. (SW lot) and take the shuttle to the campus.
