Leona H. (Lea) Boren, 79, passed away on Sunday, November 9, 2008, in Albuquerque. She was born on October 10, 1929, in Carlsbad, NM, to David and Ruth Matkins. Lea attended New Mexico State University where she met and married her husband of more than 60 years, Otis Boren. Together, they ran the Big Chief Truck Terminal in Alameda. Lea was always a beautiful and passionate woman who loved her five children, her roses, her friends, good music, and small animals beyond number. She was an avid reader of mysteries, an accomplished bowler, and a friend to tortoises. If you asked her what she would like to be doing right now, it would probably be having dinner on a cruise ship or sitting in a comfortable chair with a good book and her dogs. Lea is preceded in death by her daughter Cindy Meadows, whose loss affected her deeply. She is survived by her husband, Obie Boren; her son, Michael Boren; and daughters Terry Boren, Shelly Jackson, and Leslie Amestoy. She will be missed by her grandchildren, Lindsey Kaufman, Elizabeth Boren, Koren Obenshain, Spenser and Darcy Ruppert, Hubert and Riley Jackson, William Meadows, and Pierre III and Adam Amestoy, as well as by her great grandchildren Karleigh and Teegan Obenshain. Lea is also survived by her sister, Aliene Pennington; her brother, David Leo Matkins; their children and grandchildren; and many friends. We will all remember her with love. Those who wish to make contributions in her memory, in lieu of flowers, should make donations to their favorite charity.
