Obituary for OLIVAS

BROTHER LUKE OLIVAS, FSC Brother Bonaventure Luke, born in Santa Fe on August 19, 1911, the son of Ciriaco J. Olivas and the former Maria Martinez, both deceased, died, after an extended illness, on Thursday, October 9, 2008, in the afternoon in St. Vincent's Medical Center. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Frances and Maria Stella; and by his brothers, Fred, Sonny, Jacob A., and Waldo. He is survived by his sisters, Isabella and Adelina of Albuquerque and Rosina in California. He is also survived by 14 nieces and nephews. Jacob J. Olivas entered the junior seminary of the Christian Brothers in Las Vegas, NM in 1925. He received the garb of the Christian Brothers in 1927 and chose the name Brother Bonaventure Luke. He pronounced his life-time vows in August of 1936. His teaching assignments took him to New Iberia, Lake Charles, Covington, Lafayette, New Orleans, and Franklin, all in Louisiana. He also taught in Christian Brothers schools in Galveston and El Paso, in Texas and in Denver, CO. He taught at, and was associated with St. Michael's High School, here in Santa Fe, since 1978. He was an excellent teacher, proficient in Religion, Science, and Math, as well as Senior English. He spoke excellent French and was a Latin scholar, as well. Brother Luke spent a year in Parmenie, France, assisting in the administration of an international retreat center. During the summers of the late 1970's, he joined a number of his Brothers in Alaska where they built and repaired Catholic Churches and meeting halls in several small towns for the bishop of Alaska. A Rosary will be recited Tuesday, October 14, 2008, 7 p.m. at Berardinelli Family Chapel. A Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, October 15, 2008, 10 a.m. at St. Francis Cathedral with interment to follow at Rosario Cemetery.
