Obituary for HAMMITT

James Gordon Hammitt, 79, went Home to be with our Lord on Saturday, September 6, 2008, surrounded by his family. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Hammitt; parents, William Hammitt and Anna Campbell; son, David Hammitt; granddaughters, Valerie Miller and Gina Goodson. He is survived by his daughters, Nikki Squyres and Deborah Shafer; sister, Betty Montgomery and husband, Richard; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; six nephews; and numerous cousins. He was a distinguished veteran, having served in the Air Force from 1947-1969. After retiring in Albuquerque, he became very active in Toastmasters, American Lung Association, American Heart Association, and Lifeline. He was also extremely involved with the Boy Scouts before retiring. He continued to remain active after he moved to the Armed Forces Retirement Home in Washington, D.C. last year. A Memorial Service will be held on September 27, 2008 at 3:00 p.m., at Messiah Lutheran Church, 11515 Lomas NE, with Pastor Tim Orlowski officiating. Interment will be private, at a later date, at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe. Donations may be made to the American Lung Association.
