Obituary for SCHIEFER

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday August 03, 2008

Naomi "Nomi" Marie (Conway) Schiefer, 86, passed away peacefully Wednesday, July 30, 2008 surrounded by loved ones. Nomi was born December 3, 1921 in Ravenna, KY and was raised in and around Pittsburgh, PA. She graduated in 1939 from Westinghouse High School. After her marriage in 1942 to Hubert "Hub" Schiefer, they moved to Fort Lee, Virginia where Hub was stationed in the Army. After the war they moved back to Pittsburgh where they had many fond memories raising her children Jack and Judy. After retiring, Naomi and Hub moved to Albuquerque in 1981, where they enjoyed many years of fun family togetherness, hilarity, and lots of bingo and scratchers. She was a witty, proud Irish woman who loved gardening, playing 500, and our annual Christmas "grab bags"-a family tradition started in the depression, where for the holidays, you pick one name who receives one present after a slew of humorous "gifts." For example, for years Naomi received the remains of a pan she'd once left burning on the stove. Every Christmas she knew it was coming. Who can forget the look on her laughing face every year as she'd open the pot to see what growth had occurred? This example marks her self-deprecating wit everyone who knew her enjoyed. She was greatly loved and a true friend to all who were lucky enough to know her. She was preceded in death by her father, William Thomas Conway; mother Mary C. (Donahue) Conway; siblings Lois, Eleanor, Bill and Jim Conway; son-in-law Randy Riddle; and her beloved husband of 50 years, Hubert "Hub" Schiefer. She is survived by her son Jack Schiefer and wife Judy (Williams) of Salt Lake City, UT; daughter Judy Riddle and fiance Jack Cleary of Albuquerque; brother Jack Conway of Florida; grandchildren John Schiefer and fiance Connie Lee of San Jose, CA; Barbara (Riddle) Hennelly and husband Mark, of Roseville, CA; Steve Riddle and wife Brandi (Parker) of Albuquerque; Jennifer (Schiefer) Hunter and her husband Gavin of Salt Lake City, UT. Seven great-grandchildren will miss their grandma Nomi-Maura, Hannah, Colin and Emmett Hennelly; Brennen and Jacob Riddle; Milo Hunter (and Milo's sister, expected later this year). She is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, and life-long friends. Nomi will be remembered with a smile and missed by all who knew her. A Memorial Mass will be held Monday, August 4, 2008 at 10:30 am in her honor at Daniels Family Funeral Services, Wyoming Chapel. In lieu of flowers, we are supporting the Presbyterian Hospital Hospice In-Patient Unit at Anna Kaseman Hospital: www.phs.org/foundation - Naomi Schiefer.
