Obituary for KAHLES

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday August 03, 2008

Anna Kahles, 96, passed away Saturday, August 2, 2008, in Albuquerque, NM. She was born in the province of Banat, then part of Austro-Hungary, becoming a Romanian citizen when Banat was ceded to Romania at the end of World War I. Anna immigrated to the United States in 1930 after her marriage to Frank Kahles in the Roman Catholic Church in the small town of Comlosch. The Kahleses made their home in Chicago, where they lived for seventy-two years. They lived most of that time in the Rogers Park area of far-north Chicago, on Lake Michigan, where Frank worked as a flat-janitor and invested in real estate. Frank and Anna joined the St. Huberter Social Club in 1938, and were members until the club was dissolved around 1995. The club preserved the culture of the German-Speaking citizens of Banat and was active in supporting members of their group who were displaced by World War II and the ensuing takeover of the region by Communist regimes. The big event of the year was the Club's Kirchweih, which was an evening of feasting and dancing culminating in teenage couples parading the strauss of rosemary and ribbons in a coming-of-age ceremony. After retirement in 1972, the Kahleses bought a bungalow in Skokie, Illinois, a Chicago suburb. Anna quickly became an aunt, confidant, and mentor to the younger wives in her neighborhood. A wonderful cook, she was specially noted for her baking and Old World dishes. She was active in St. Peter's Catholic Church, in Skokie for thirty years, until her move to Albuquerque to reside with her daughter, Margaret and son-in-law Bill Bowers, in 2002. Since then, she made many new friends as a member of Church of the Risen Savior and at the Village of Alameda, where she has resided for over two years and received wonderful care. Anna's beloved husband of 77 years, Frank, preceded her in death in November 2007, at the age of 100. She is survived by her daughter, Margaret Bowers, and husband, Bill of Albuquerque, NM; granddaughter, Laurie Thompson, and husband, Rogan; great-grandsons, Derek and Aidan Thompson, all of Albuquerque; grandson, Michael Bowers and wife, Yu-Ling, great-granddaughter, Marina Bowers, all of Seattle, and many nephews and nieces living in Germany and Romania, with whom she had maintained contact. Visitation will be held on Sunday, August 3, 2008 from 7:00pm to 9:00pm in the Chapel of Daniels Family Funeral Services on Wyoming. Rosary will be recited on Monday, August 4, 2008, at 1:00pm at Risen Savior Catholic Church, with Mass to follow at 2:00pm. Interment will immediately follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Anna's honor to Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation, P.O. Box 26666, Albuquerque, NM, 87125. Arrangements and services are entrusted to: Daniels Family Funeral Services 7601 Wyoming Blvd. NE Albuquerque, New Mexico 87109 (505) 821-0010 www.danielsfuneral.com
