Obituary for TILLER

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Thursday July 17, 2008

James A. Tiller, beloved father, grandfather, uncle, and friend to many, passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2008 in Albuquerque. He was born in Atlanta, GA, in 1926. He served as a ball turret gunner in the Air Force in the Second World War, but was a peace-loving person to all who knew him. After the war, he attended Georgia Tech and graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design. He married the late Hazel Jackson and settled in Louisville, KY, where his children, Jeff and Sandy were born. During his career as an Industrial Designer, he worked in Atlanta, Chattanooga, Ames (Iowa), and the Los Angeles area. Jim was a long-time member of AA and actively participated in meetings in Corrales. He loved nature and was an avid hiker in the desert and mountains around Albuquerque. He was a talented artist and painted many scenes from the natural world. He was always ready to compete in a game of chess, bridge, casino, rummy, or any new game. He enjoyed good (and bad) jokes and, complete with a giveaway grin, regaled all who would listen. Jim was a member of the Rio Rancho Unitarian Church and had an intense curiosity about history, religion, and the plight of the human race. Survivors include daughter, Sandy Tiller; son, Jeff Tiller; son-in-law, William Schmidt; daughter-in-law, Ingrid Kraus; grandchildren Denali, Connor, Maia, Adam and Eli; and nieces and nephews, David, Carol, Susan, Kathy, Bill Jr., Tom, Barbara, and Jim. He was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel; sisters, Jean Allen and Marianne Hayford; in-laws, Cliff (Red) Allen, Catherine and Bill Lloyd, Martha and Clarence Roberts, and Hugh Hayford; and niece, Nancy. Jim will also be missed by all of his many friends in Albuquerque, the Atlanta area, and elsewhere. A Memorial Service will be conducted on Saturday, July 19, 2008.
