James Lee Gober, 74, of Stanley, NM passed gently, but too quickly, into Heaven on Thursday, July 10, 2008. Lt. Col., Ret. Graduate of Albuquerque High School, UNM, and received his Masters Degree from Chapel Hill N.C. as a City and Regional planner. In 1962, he worked as an intern for the National Capital Planning Commission in Washington, D.C. There he caught the eye of Flash Gray, one of the worlds great planners who brought him to the Tennessee Valley Authority, where he became his successor. TVA's contract with USAID sent him to many parts of the world including The Ivory Coast, Portugal, Thailand and the Philippines. Their goal was to make peoples lives better through use of technologies developed in the United States. In 2000, after his career as planner and navigator in the 134th Air Refueling Group of the Tennessee Air National Guard, he returned to his native New Mexico and built a lovely home Northeast of Stanley. There he became a gentleman rancher through the help of his neighbor and close friend Sam James. He raised some beautiful foals thanks to his dear friends George and Maria Davis. He loved to hunt elk with his brothers Rich and Buz, and to be in the woods with horses and friends like Jerry Gladdish, Mike Sather, and Frank Lueddeke whom he thought of as his own personal chef. He loved flying, and since the early 1950's had owned several small private planes. After all these years he kept in close contact with Mike White, legendary teacher and principal with APS that Jim had as a teacher at Lincoln Jr High. He raised his children with love and respect and gentle discipline. And they adored him and will miss him everyday of their lives, as will anyone whoever knew him. He is survived by his adoring wife Jamrat (Nit) and his children Julie Ann Gober-Shelton and Steve, Amy Elizabeth Gober-Shelton and Scott, Sarah Margaret Gober-Tennant and Harold, Ploy Chaikerd, Lizabeth Gober, Cindy Gober, and James Gober. Also, his brothers, Richard and Betty Gober and Elgan Clayton (Buz) and Sheila Dardenne; and sister, Eileen Dale Thompson. He had an extra special helping of love for his seven precious grandchildren, Kate Lauren Shelton, Summer Lee Shelton, James William Shelton II, Hannah MacKenzie Shelton, Connor Scott Shelton, Cody McKinley Tennant, and Kay Margaret Tennant. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Benevolence Fund at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Edgewood, where he also had many friends. Services will be held at Good Shepherd 7:00 p.m., on Monday July 14, 2008, interment private.
