Obituary for HAYES

Dr. Frederick P. Hayes, 30-year APS educator and Albuquerque resident, passed away on Sunday, May 18, 2008, after suffering a sudden heart attack. He is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Emma Jean Hayes and their three children, Stacey Hayes and wife, Mary, daughter, Bernice and son, Ryan, daughter, Adrienne and daughter, Khadijah; sister-in-law, Peggy Freeman and her sons, Bel and Mike; brother-in-law, Cmdr. Allan Rogers and wife, Helen. Dr. Hayes will be remembered by the thousands of students he influenced through the years because of his dynamic, unconventional style and his love of teaching and his students. They will all recall his hilarious tales of growing up in the slums of NYC and his vivid stories of WWII missions as a B-17 tail gunner. After the war, he came to recuperate in New Mexico and loved it so much he stayed. He received his BA and MA from UNM, then went on the Denver University, where he received his PhD in Creative Writing and English. He was a prolific writer of numerous novels and short stories, the most important being, "The Adventures of Pinto Bean and Chapulin" and "The Chili Pot", which can still be found in many school and public libraries. Memorial services to celebrate his life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 22, 2008 at French Mortuary - Lomas Chapel, 10500 Lomas Blvd NE.
