Obituary for ECKERT

George Henry Eckert, 77, of Albuquerque, passed away on Thursday, May 15, 2008 at home surrounded by his loving family. George was born on May 12, 1931, in Santa Fe to the late Charles and Josephine Eckert; he was the 12th of 13 children. George was a star athlete in football and basketball at St. Michaels High School, earning recognition as a high school All-American in basketball. He later played basketball for and graduated from Regis University in Denver. In 1955, he married his bride of 53 years, Kathryn Jordan. George was an interior decorator and manager of Eckert's Furniture, a family business, owned by his sister --the late Josephine Eckert Huber. He was a partner with his sister Jo for 35 years, later starting his own interior design business. He loved sports second only to his family; was a founding member of the Albuquerque Tennis Club, the Sandia Peak Ski Area and was a 25-year member of the Rotary Club. He is survived by his wife Katie and their four children and spouses: Martin Eckert of Albuquerque, John and Samantha Eckert of Placitas, Amy and Doug Cordova of Cibolo, Texas, and Joe and Cathy Eckert of Colorado Springs, Colorado. His seven grandchildren are Katie, Samantha, Ricky, Abigail, Amy, Julia, and Ann. His two surviving sisters are Margaret Cornell of Albuquerque and Eloisa Branch of Washington, DC. A Rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m., on Sunday, May 18, 2008 at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 4020 Lomas N.E.. A funeral mass will held Monday May 19, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at the church.
