Obituary for FLICKINGER

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday May 04, 2008

Garrett W., resident of Albuquerque, passed away on April 25, 2008. Mr. Flickinger was born on July 9, 1928 in Erie, Pennsylvania but moved at a young age to South Bend, Indiana where he spent his childhood years. While in high school he studied drama and wanted that to be his college major. Due to parental pressures he settled instead for the study of law and graduated magna cum laude from Yale University in 1950 with a pre-law degree. He attended the University of Michigan Law School and earned his Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1953. During the Korean Conflict, Mr. Flickinger was drafted into the army and was employed in the G-2 (intelligence) section of a Headquarters Company. His military career was cut short in 1955 when he ruptured a disc in his back leading to his discharge. Mr. Flickinger returned to his pre-military law practice, but realized he wished to teach rather than practice law. He taught for three years at the Boston University Law School before accepting a position with the Kentucky University School of Law. In 1975, after eleven years in Kentucky, he was hired as a law professor at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque and remained there until his retirement in 1993. While following his teaching career, Mr. Flickinger continued to enjoy his passion for the theatre and participated in thirty-five productions for Music Theatre Southwest. His two favorite roles were Joseph Porter in "H.M.S. Pinafore" and the Major General in "The Pirates of Penzance". He was always the law professor who would be an actor.
