Obituary for HALL

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Thursday April 24, 2008

Laura Hall passed into her eternal rest on Sunday, April 20, 2008. Known affectionately as "Laura Lee," she was born December 17, 1925, in Altus, OK to Henry and Fannie Starkey. She attended Oklahoma Baptist University at Shawnee, OK prior to her first marriage to Harold Miller, a Navy pilot, during WWII. After being released from the service, they moved to his home in Missouri. Soon after, he became ill and she took a teaching position in a one room school known as "Pinhook." This was the beginning of a long teaching career. After five years of marriage, Harold passed away from leukemia. She then married Russell Lindley and became mother to his two daughters, Carol and Sue. In 1956, the family moved to Albuquerque and settled in the Alameda community. Upon the death of her second husband in 1960, she returned to college finishing her BA degree at St. Joseph's College and her MA degree at UNM. She taught in the APS system for twenty-five years, where she was a dedicated teacher and a hard taskmaster. Laura is well remembered by many of her former students and by many of their children who she also taught. She retired from her position after a number of years at Alameda Elementary School but remained active in the NBA. Laura subsequently married two more times, first to Vernon Hall who passed away in 1990 and then to Fred Peckinpaugh who passed away in 2002. She was an active member of the Hoffmantown Baptist Church. Laura became involved with The Young at Heart Senior Gospel Choir eighteen years ago and served as vice president and a member of the official board for several years. She traveled with the choir extensively sharing her lovely alto solos and poignant (sometimes humorous) testimony. With an extended family of over one hundred twenty choir members, she has been a most beloved and revered presence and will be missed. Laura is survived by two daughters, Carol Beale of Littleton, NC and Sue Burow of Denten, TX; two stepsons, Dennis Peckinpaugh of Albuquerque and Tom Peckinpaugh of Benson, AZ; two grandchildren, Patrick Blankenship of Atlanta, GA and Jennifer McCall of Denton, TX; three great-grandchildren; and a host of friends. Services will held on Saturday, April 26, 2008, 10:00 a.m., at Sandia Baptist Church, 9429 Constitution NE. Friends may visit French Mortuary, Wyoming Blvd. Chapel on Friday, April 25, 2008, 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established with the Young at Heart Choir, P.O.
