Obituary for MAUNEY

Catherine H. Mauney, age 101, resident of Covenant Village, Gastonia, NC died March 24, 2008, at Covenant Village. She was born in Conover, NC on December 14, 1906, to Dr. and Mrs. Franklin L. Herman. She was educated in Catawba Co. at the Free School Concordia College and graduated from Lenoir Rhyne College in 1929. After teaching school for a year, she married Carl Fisher Mauney in 1930, and they settled in his hometown of Kings Mountain, NC. She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Carl F. Mauney; daughter-in-law, Emily Fisher Mauney; and grand daughter-in-law, Rebecca Hockaday Mauney. She was a devoted wife, mother, and friend, and faithfully served God and her church. Mrs. Mauney was a fulltime homemaker, an active member of Kings Mountain Garden Club, the Kings Mountain Woman's Club, and the Home Arts Club. For over 78 years,she was a member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, serving on the Altar Guild, and the Women of the Church, and as a Sunday School and Bible Study Teacher. She was an extraordinary gardener, growing a bounty of fruits and vegetables for family and friends, but her expertise was as a rose horticulturist, growing over 100 varieties, which she tended and gave for celebratory events to family, friends, and the community. In 1993, Mrs. Mauney sold her home in Kings Mountain and moved to Covenant Village, a retirement community in Gastonia, NC, where she has enjoyed living, lately, one of the oldest and most admired residents. Survivors: Sons: Herman Mauney, Albuquerque, NM, Charles Mauney and wife, Lynne, Blowing Rock, NC. Daughter: Kay Berkeley and husband. Bill, Spartanburg, SC; nine grandchildren: Carl, Charles, Cathy, Kaki, Carla, Leigh, Stephen, Beth, and Jon; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Memorial Service: St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Saturday, April 5, 2008, 2:00 p.m., Rev. Bill Jeffcoat and Rev. David Lohr, officiating. Visitation: Saturday, April 5, 2008, immediately following the service at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Kings Mountain, NC . The family will also receive friends at Covenant Village, Gastonia, NC on Wednesday, April 2, 2008, 3:30 p.m. Entombment: Mountain Rest Cemetery, Kings Mountain, North Carolina. A private Entombment will be held at the family mausoleum.
